home birth | Pearl Maria
As a professional photographer, it is one of the greatest honors you can receive when a very talented fellow photographer asks you to photograph one of the most personal, intimate and important days on her calendar.
Rebecca was the first photographer in Columbia to take a chance on me and invite me to second shoot a wedding with her. We have a similar style and a very similar philosophy about telling stories with our photographs and the beauty of documenting real, unstaged life. So when she asked if I might be interested in documenting her home birth I jumped on the opportunity.
Since the first time we met, Rebecca has been consistently extremely kind, intentional, joy-filled, welcoming, helpful and willing to share her wisdom. Seth, her husband, and Logan, her son, are just as kind, welcoming and filled with joy. It was a gift to spend such a special day in their home telling the story of little Pearl’s arrival.
My favorite part of the whole experience, other than the intense and miraculous moment when Pearl first came into the world, was witnessing how well Seth loved Rebecca, and everyone present for that matter. He was kind, helpful, positive, upbeat and joyful the entire day, encouraging Rebecca with words and touch all the while prepping things, helping Logan & offering us (me plus Dawn and Kim, their wonderful midwives) more food, water, and anything else we might need. Rebecca did some seriously brave and incredible work birthing Pearl naturally and Seth did an amazing job of loving and caring for his family on such an extraordinary day. Although, I have a feeling that kindness and caring is sort of an everyday kind of thing around the Allen household.
Seth and Rebecca, it was a true honor to be there to tell your story. I’m thankful for your sweet family of four and thrilled that Pearl and Logan get to have the two of you as parents. They are well loved. Happy birthday sweet Pearl, welcome to the world!!
